The Woodmans
Date: WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19TH 2011 – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1ST 2011
Venue: Film Forum209 W. Houston Street
Admission: $12.50

Francesca Woodman’s work is undeniable: her photographs, mostly black-and-white (and often nude) self-portraits, are at once beautiful and gender-political, ethereal and strikingly personal. Her life is similarly attractive to the art public: she committed suicide shortly after leaving art school and moving to New York, at the age of 22, and so is at once the tortured artist and the eternally young beauty. Between her death in 1981 and the present, she’s had solo shows at, among others, Victoria Miro, Marian Goodman, and the Palazzo Reale in Milan, and appeared in innumerable group shows— all the doing of her parents. “The Woodmans” examines both Francesca’s life and work and her parents’ struggles to deal with—and, more cynically, profit from—the death of a daughter, at the same time attempting to pursue their own careers as artists. It’s received generally positive reviews, and has its theatrical release at the Film Forum exclusively from the 19th of January.
