Flux Factory: Not-So-Silent Open Call

by Paddy Johnson on October 16, 2012 Events + Opportunities

Scene from Flux Factory's 2011 Not-So-Silent Auction. This Ann Hirsch photo was a hit.

Is your art a little too weird for the establishment?  Do you like to wear a few too many kinds of plaid at once? Has your mother ever expressed worry about your future?

If you’ve said “yes” to any of these questions, it’s time to submit your work to Flux Factory’s open call for submissions. They’re looking for work to display at their annual benefit December 19th, and as one of the few  non-profits that actually looks and acts like an alternative space in the city we think they should be on your radar. We love them.

Here’s some more deets from their website:

Flux Factory is looking for New York’s brightest visual, performance, and sound artists to help make our annual benefit a unique event! Now it’s its fifth year, we’ll be auctioning dozens of artworks during our Not-So-Silent Art Auction & Gala to raise money for NYC’s favorite little art collective and residency program.

We’re placing an open call for a range of activities to take place at this major fundraiser on the evening of December 19, 2012, at 79 Walker Street. To give you a sense of our previous auctions, take a look at our event pages for 2011 and 2010.

Specifically, we’re looking for:

Elevator installations
We’ve got access to an elevator and want our guests to listen to something more exciting than Muzak. Maybe you’d like to compile an audio history of Flux Factory, or you might have some unused field recordings that are too good to be stuck unheard on your laptop. Either way, we want to hear from you!

Emcees
All you wannabe Ryan Seacrests out there (OK, we’d prefer if you have more personality than Ryan Seacrest), get ready to let your extrovert shine, and tell us why you should host this year’s auction. We’ll need someone to welcome guests, get the crowd bidding via silent auction bid sheets, introduce speakers during the award ceremony, and add some electricity to the evening.

Visuals
Hey you graphic design nerds! Want to come up with a slideshow of compelling images, GIFs, and whatnot to introduce our art-celebs and auction items? Your work will be projected throughout the evening, and we’ll be sure to let our hundreds of attendees know you’re awesome.

Take-me-home artworks
We’re looking for portable and/or participatory projects that will interact with guests. Examples of takeaway art projects might include: GIF portraits, artsy manicures, food sculptures, or creative tarot card readings.
