Creative Capital’s Merry Christmas to a Bigger Art World

Big woots all around for Creative Capital. This year’s 2012 Arts Writers grantees reflect writing for the 99%: writing to preserve histories, writing as activism, and writing to create a community for yourself. We’re glad to see Alan Moore (whom I interviewed this summer on his involvement with and documentation of ABC No Rio) has won to write a book on art squats, and that Daniel R. Quiles won for writing about the history of artists on public access TV (something we’ve also been keeping an eye on this year). Stephen Zacks will be writing a book on New York City’s late 60s-early 80s cultural movements, which were heavily influenced by real estate takeovers– an important history now, for obvious reasons. Negar Azimi (senior editor of Bidoun) will write the first book on the cultural history of Iran in the 60s and 70s.

They’ve also awarded a few new and non-New York blogs. Meg Onli’s Chicago-based blog Black Visual Archive won for its archive of exhibition listings and writings on contemporary black artists. Harbeer Sandhu will create Critical Condition, an art blog for Houston, Texas. We’ll be looking forward to reading those, and more. Lots more.

The foundation says they don’t fund archives. I wonder why they chose to fund the Black Visual Archive…..
