My favorite exhibitions of 2012 is up at the L Magazine. No museum shows this year. Ghosts in the Machine was the only one that came close to making the list. Lots of under recognized talent this year, Viola Yesiltac, and Michael Barryhill amongst them.
4. Viola Yesiltac: Scharfstellen was Autofokus war, Balice Herling & Lewis
This was the most under-recognized show of the season in my opinion. It’s hard to say exactly what makes these photographs of paper so good, but part of it seems to be the transformation of recognizable objects into minimalist abstraction. It’s a simple but visually effective gesture.

If we can add our own favorites I’d say Laura Letinsky at the MCA Chicago: http://www.mcachicago.org/exhibitions/now/2011/292
also photos of paper (plus some not-paper detritus) but with still life as a reference point
Perhaps we all need to take a year off from art. We obviously took a tangent into a dead end some decades ago. Lets come back in 2014 and we can all discuss what art is once again, instead of the lame anything is art mantra, which of course means art is nothing. And so it is.
Go hiking, take cooking classes, learn to swim, plant a garden, do some social work like helping homeless or kids, and lets get back to something with meaning and at least resembling purpose in 2014
This aint it.
Games toys and therapy are NOT art.
Happy New Year!
Go for it Donald. And take a break from trolling here. Happy New Year.
