The ArtCycle Discovers Prize finalists have been announced. This fall, the art consignment service experts over at ArtCycle invited MFA students across the city to submit their work to the ArtCycle Discovers Prize. Today, after going through over 100 entries, 7 finalists were chosen.  The winner of first ArtCycle prize will win $1,000, and a prized spot in the ArtCycle roster of talent. The finalists are from Hunter, Columbia, Parsons, and Pratt. Each will have their work viewed by Barry Schwabsky, art critic for The Nation and co-editor of international reviews for Artforum, and a panel of judges as they select a winner from this select group.

A group exhibition will be curated by Jaime Rojo and held at Gallery Brooklyn. It features the following finalists:

Jenna Bauer, CUNY Hunter, painting
Leo Castaneda, CUNY Hunter, painting
Caroline Falby, CUNY Hunter, collage
Bing Han, Parsons The New School for Design, painting
Mira Hunter, Columbia University, performance/video
Lilian Kreutzberger, Parsons The New School for Design, painting
Shahpour Pouyan, Pratt Institute, painting/video

Of the finalists, we think Hahpour Pouyan‘s video projection on canvas of explosions from the Iraq war are worthy of note, if only for their beauty. Our favorite work, though, comes from Mira Hunter, an MFA student at Columbia and a second generation whirling dervish. The video submitted is a 13 minute long loop of a Durational Public Whirling in Grand Central Station. “I am interested in what transpires when the body and mind are engaged in physically intense extremes” she wrote in her statement. “What happens to one when the other gives out?”

Attend The Discovers Prize group exhibition February 2nd, 2013, 6PM* at Gallery Brooklyn (351 Van Brunt St, Red Hook, Brooklyn) and find out.
