People are killing time on the Internet again. Welcome, #emojiarthistory, an art meme in which participants offer emoji translations for the names of famous artists. It took me about an hour to figure out how to get emoji to display on my phone, and it doesn’t seem to play well with my browser, so I’m not much of a player in this game. [Hyperallergic]
Relatedly, revisit one of my favorite Internet projects, Emoji Dick; or by Fred Benenson. [Emoji Dick]
Richard Artschwager has died. This saddens me. His retrospective of paintings and sculptures at The Whitney was one of the best shows I saw last year. A great Artschwager quote, key to understanding his work from the Times’ obit; “Sculpture is for the touch, painting is for the eye. I wanted to make a sculpture for the eye and a painting for the touch.” [NYTimes]
Gallerist reviews Artforum’s advertising. A good idea, botched by terrible commentary. [Gallerist]
Shane Ferro asks whether investing in art makes sense. Lots of back and forth here, but if you hate being taxed, the answer is an unequivocal “no”. [ArtInfo]

AFC should review Art Forum’s ads. Next issue! Instead of “We Went to Chelsea” “We Looked at the Pictures in Art Forum.”
I suppose another alternative is to review the reviews of ArtForum’s ads. I have a feeling that’d be a really boring alternative though.
