In its second year, EXPO CHICAGO continues to bring in new blood. This year’s IN/SITU, the fair’s curatorial project devoted to site-specific and large-scale work, will be curated by LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) Director Shamim M. Momin. Yes, that Shamim M. Momin who is single-handedly responsible for putting art in Los Angeles’ roadways, homes, museums, and anything that might loosely be considered public space. And yes, that Shamim M. Momin who co-curated the 2004 and 2008 Whitney Biennials. For the latter, it was reported that she performed a whopping 600 studio visits in a single year.
We’re suspect of that number, but we’re looking forward to seeing what she has in store for EXPO CHICAGO, hosted at Navy Pier, Chicago’s own mini-Coney Island. Will there be art on the ferris wheel? Performances in the booths of Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.? Probably not, but based on the 2008 Whitney Biennial’s “gypsy-themed feast“, we can expect something offbeat.
