That Ryan McGinley Billboard Looks Like an Apple Ad

In his latest public art project, artist Ryan McGinley pays homage to what Chelsea’s all about: the Apple store. Yesterday, High Line Art unveiled McGinley’s billboard, and it looks almost exactly like a classic iPod ad. Throughout the month of April, this billboard will overlook Chelsea at the corner of 18th Street and 10th Avenue, reminding you to visit the Apple store after you leave the galleries, and before you hop on the train.

As did the iPod ads, the piece harkens back to Robert Longo’s contorted figures in “Men in the Cities”. We don’t have much more to add to that historical reference.

This project continues Ryan McGinley’s foray into public art, which began this January with his “Taxi TV” project. It also continues a year of ham-handed public art projects in New York, which so far includes dancing horses and spinning buildings.

    Between this and the Wes Anderson Prada commercial video you just posted, it seems like artists are really getting into the commerce game (or is it the reverse?)

    Just put a giant M on the artscene’s heads, for Mark. Like apple, its all about image, not substance. While the mac is fine with its own glitches; dies suddenly cant repair, oversimplified for dummies, PCs have their own issues. Loaded with unnecessary crap drainiing RAM, virus and popups(just stay off the artscene, porn and games and you will be fine).
    But the real difference is, Nada, not prada. Jobs was a master matketer and thats it. He got wannabe cool kids to fork over four times as much for basically the same thing, especially since they went intel chip. My wife being unprejudiced(and not white) was a finance major so comfortable on PCs, then design so uses Macs, but at home bought a monster PC for her magazine on sale for one tenth the price of a fashionable Mac, and if you are trained or ask at Adobe conventions, you will find absolutely not difference in ease and ability of work.
    I am in the print production end and we are forced to use Macs in preProduction because of our imprinted clients, but PCs for the printers. Its al the same, just depends on how gullible you are. And as this is the artscene, well…..M.

    I got a James Bond titles feel from this. Give me a silhouette of Daniel Craig pointing a gun at this body. He’s wearing an ipod too. We can keep the Apple theme. In fact it’s an Apple themed Bond movie. First scene: Longhua, Shenzhen. The soviets are running the FoxConn factory and planning a nuclear strike on the US by embedding explosives inside Apple devices.
