Join Us at Smack Mellon’s Derby Day Benefit Tomorrow!

Derby Day!

Saturday’s a good day for betting. The 139th Kentucky Derby race takes place at precisely 6:24 pm, and while it only takes about 2 minutes for the horses to run the track, most of Derby celebrations will take up the better part of the afternoon.

I’ve cleared my calendar of all Derby Day events tomorrow, so I have the day to attend the annual Derby Day fundraiser at Smack Mellon. I like gambling, and they’ve got plenty of that; horse racing bidding will determine the order party attendees can chose the art they’ll take home. Spend $250 on a ticket and you’ll be sure to get something. There’s also a silent auction and a raffle!

More importantly though, I’m clearing my calendar for this events, because Smack Mellon needs our help. It’s a small organization still reeling from the effects of Sandy. The hurricane may not be news any more, but it doesn’t mean it’s not present in our lives. If you think support for the emerging arts, under-recognized artists, and women artists is important, then we can’t let Sandy take its toll on Smack Mellon. It’s one of the great exhibition spaces in the city, and it needs its residency program back. Attending this benefit will help that.
