Drumroll, please! This year’s jurors have been announced for ArtPrize, the world’s largest public art competition. In September, throngs of visitors will descend on Grand Rapids, Michigan for the high-spirited event, when art will take over the city. From laundromats to water fountains, art can be found in the most surprising of public places. No wonder, then, that this year’s jury comprises a stellar cast of those-in-the-know about public art:
The Grand Jurors include:
Manon Slome – President and Chief Curator of No Longer Empty
Mel Chin – Conceptual artist who engages cultural, political, and social space
Anne Pasternak – President, Artistic Director of Creative Time
Category jurors include:
2D Work: John Yau – Editor of Hyperallergic Weekend, poet, and critic
3D Work: Hesse McGraw – Curator at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts
Time-Based Work: Rashida Bumbray – Independent curator, most recently of The Kitchen
Use of Urban Space: Eva Franch i Gilabert – Director of the Storefront for Art and Architecture
Venue: Alice Gray Stites – Chief curator and Director of art programming for 21c Museum Hotels
Together with the public vote, this panel will distribute $200,000 in cash prizes: five totaling $20,000 and one Juried Grand Prize totaling $100,000.
We here at AFC appreciate ArtPrize’s “anything goes” ethos. This art is the stuff that dreams are made of, unbounded by popular trends and the art market. It’s not hard to imagine what this looks like: you’ll find a big rusty dog or a bar-on-wheels playing “The Final Countdown” as often as you’ll find a meticulous painting. That’s so rare.
ArtPrize’s open call for artists is happening right now. You can register online at www.artprize.org.
