This week Five Jobs brings you our “foot in the door” list, a collection of jobs that may not seem super glamorous but will offer access to the world of gainful employment.

FULL-TIME

Associate Copy Editor at Artnet (New York, NY)
How to Apply

Artnet’s magazine may have gone the way of the Titanic, but the site’s still in need of an editor for its auction, valuation, and artist databases. This position will involve writing the occasional feature-length text.

Associate for Administration in the Asian Art Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, NY)
How to Apply

The Met is looking for someone with a minimum of one-year experience in an administrative position, a BA, and proficiency in some dull software (“The Museum System, Kronos Timekeeping System, and ADP expense report system preferred”). While this job may help you get your foot in the door at the Met, it is really just a desk job that doesn’t require you know Japanese, Chinese, or Korean.

Art Consultant at Axelle Fine Arts (Boston, MA)
How to Apply

This full time permanent job at Axelle Fine Arts centers on sales, client relations, and the like. For gallerists who have only ever worked in New York, it’s a chance to build your contact book. Also, the description asks that you work Saturday and Sunday. But it’s a five day a week job with health benefits, and who can argue with that?

Head of Research Unit and Senior Researcher at Spear’s (London, England)
How to Apply

Across the pond Spear’s Magazine is looking for a Head and Senior Researcher in the Spear’s Research Unit. The job description doesn’t make either role sound particularly artsy, but you would be answering to Josh Spero, who does write about art. The real appeal of these jobs comes at the end of the posting:

“There are plenty of perks to working at Spear’s: as well as building your contact book, there are luxury travel assignments, restaurant and bar reviews, once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the freedom to explore and develop your own interests within journalism and a young, ambitious, friendly team.”

PART-TIME

Advertising Sales at MODERN Magazine (New York, NY)
How to Apply

MODERN is looking for someone with sales experience and a working knowledge of the design world to sell print advertising to design galleries and private dealers. The job’s only part-time and temporary, but it sounds perfect for those with a flexible schedule, especially since you get to work from home.
