Don’t be fooled by the normal-sized events list; this is just a sampling from the half million openings available to you in Chelsea on Wednesday and Thursday and the PS1 Book Fair, which will be putting on more panels and dialogues and conversations than are humanly consumable this weekend (the zine tent alone is an afternoon’s work). A Picasso sculpture exhibition and David Zwirner’s double solo shows by Isa Genzken and Wolfgang Tillmans are just a few we think will be spamming your Facebook in weeks to come.

The publishing world may still be adjusting to the online marketplace, but zine culture has officially exploded. No more is this more evident than at the New York Art Book Fair, which this year boasts 350 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, institutions, and independent publishers from around the world. Now in its ninth year, the fair expects more than 27,000 people to attend.

To those visitors we say, “Prepare to be inspired. Anticipate spending more than you think.” We found that all our tiny purchases at the zine section added up a little too quickly.

Here are our highlights:

Editor’s note: Even we get sick of our own opinions. So rather than send one person to survey an event as large as the New York Art Book Fair, we asked a handful of artists, writers, curators, and designers for their picks. Good news: they came back to us with an indispensable reading list based on decades of experience and reflection. We know what we’re getting for Christmas this year.

Artist Iman Issa gave a talk Saturday evening at the NY Art Book Fair, prompted by her recent inclusion in “Short Stories”, at the Sculpture Center. The talk succeeded in shedding some light on how the artist’s stated pursuit of “precise communication” results in the highly-abstract installations for which she’s known – but also offered insight into why these works often confound more than they clarify.

“You’re coming back right?” a few friends asked me last night at The New York Art Book Fair opening. This was pretty much the topic of the night, as the crowd was full of bookish types making their way through three floors of book vendors. There’s simply too much for the avid reading nerd to […]

The New York Art Book Fair

by Art Fag City on October 1, 2007

Photo: AFC I might have led with the mp3 I captured during the Lovely Daze hosted performances yesterday at Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair, but the sound file I recorded with my cellphone mimics the crappy photos I take for the site so it’s pretty much pointless. The all-women noise band I saw […]

The NY Art Book Fair and New Yorker Festival Event Recommendations

by Paddy Johnson on September 27, 2011

It’s hard to imagine a busier culture week for New York than this one. AFC’s Whitney Kimball is about to unleash our gallery opening picks for this week alone – oddly enough Lisa Yuskavage at David Zwirner is on our list of shows to see (we, like everybody else, enjoy crotch shots and boobs) — and both the NY Art Book Fair and The New Yorker Festival will run Friday through Sunday. Given the sheer volume of events to go see, I’ve picked out a few anticipated talks from the NY Art Book Fair and The New Yorker Festival. I have a feeling this will be a very fun weekend.
