“Greetings from Captain John. There will be no swimming and no diving.” Sailing on the Frieze ferry to Randall’s Island, the driver told us that we were on our way to vacation, but cautioned against letting loose with freewheeling abandon. Once we landed, that ethos seemed to be in effect at the fair itself: dealers and collectors were having fun, and the fair was certainly crowded, but nobody was breaking out champagne in the early afternoon over skyrocketing sales.

Even though the hum around Armory week seems subdued this year, visiting half-a-dozen-plus art fairs can in a few days’ time can feel like a week on a Eurail pass. Naive outsiders are treated harshly, the food is unfamiliar and overpriced, and you spend a lot of time snooping around taking pictures. With almost 50 works by Warhol and nearly 100 works by artists who have responded to Warhol in some way, the show was bound to cause a stir because really, which artist hasn’t been influenced by Andy Warhol? With this in mind, critics ask: is Regarding Warhol an intelligently curated retrospective that explores important aspects of Warhol’s work, or is Regarding Warhol a celebrity driven, gimmicky attendance boost?

In May, AFC reported that Rob Pruitt’s The Andy Monument would stay in Union Square through the end of the summer. This week, the Contemporary Art Museum Houston (CAMH) unveiled a crowdsourcing campaign to bring The Andy Monument to Texas. The sculpture will be on view in Union Square until September 4, 2012.
