GIF of the Day: How We All Feel After Art Basel Miami Beach

Here are some GIFs of a little girl throwing a tantrum and taking a nap on an overcast, damp beach. This is exactly how we all feel today, so we won’t be posting like we usually do.

Here’s a summary of just what we’ve been up to in Miami:

We brought you not one, not two, but three itineraries for ABMB week.
We launched our new project space, Fine Art Gallery, at Artist-Run at the SATELLITE Show, with F.A.G. Bar.
We were disappointed by the main fair at the convention center.
Paddy loved UNTITLED.
I liked NADA, but Paddy still had mixed feelings. We both agree that The Fontainebleau isn’t a great venue for that art fair.
Pulse’s move to the beach was welcome, but the fair still needs some work.
I noticed a lot of booths with similar looks, and picked who wore it better.
After a week of trudging around lackluster commercial fairs, Paddy expressed our undying love of Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s Artist-Run at the SATELLITE.
And yesterday, love (of the hopefully undying variety) seemed to be in the air at the Artist-Run—two of the participants decided to get married after having met each other just four days prior. Of course, we were there to document the moment in GIF.

Don’t worry, there’s more to come about our Miami adventures. And we haven’t forgotten about New York—our regular events listings will be back tomorrow.

But for now, we’ll be sleeping off our Basel weekend.

Miami Beyond the Fairs, Part II

Art Basel Miami Beach doesn’t technically begin until next week, but myriad satellite fairs, pop-ups, and exhibitions at institutions and artist-run spaces have pretty much turned Miami “Art Week” into a season unto itself. Announcing F.A.G. and a New, Artist-Run Satellite Show in Miami

We’re pleased to announce that Art F City is launching a new project space/curatorial platform called Fine Art Gallery. Fine Art Gallery will be primarily based out of Brooklyn, but we’re kicking off our programing with a booth in Tiger Strikes Asteroid’s Satellite Show during Art Basel Miami Beach 2015.

We’ll disclose more details about our project in the coming weeks, but we’re pretty excited about the new art fair, which will feature international artist-run spaces and collectives in Miami Beach’s defunct Ocean Terrace Hotel. Tiger Strikes Asteroid released the exhibitor list today, and we’re happy to report that it includes many of the galleries who participated in Baltimore’s Artist-Run Art Fair this summer, which we christened “The Art Fair that Doesn’t Suck”.

Monday Links: New York Magazine Is Down

New York Magazine’s website became the victim of a denial of service attack last night by someone named “ThreatKing.” He claims to hate New York City—he once had a bad vacation here—and has more hacks in store. The website has been down since last night and is still not running. They had just published a story that included 35 different accounts by women who claimed to have been sexually assaulted by Bill Cosby. [The Daily Dot]
It’s 1996. The best techno DJ goes by the name “Cyberstorm,” dresses up like a robot, and Christina Applegate likes him. Okay, that’s just the premise of Vibrations, a movie about a rock-star without hands who reinvents himself as a DJ. [YouTube]
Art Basel launches a new website. New functions include a social one, where you can “favorite” works of art from galleries participating at the art fair. Could this advertising be a way for Art Basel to monetize its online presence? [Art Basel]
On July 24, a fire swept through the building housing Chicago’s artist-run space the Hills Esthetic Center. They’re currently accepting donations. A note from Facebook: “The group of us at The Hills pretty much lost everything, all of the art we made, collected and housed for nearly 10 years is completely gone, as well as tools, electronics, computers, hard drives, cash, all of our clothes and thousands of hours of love//labor…. We are going to plan a fundraiser sometime soon, but in the meantime we are accepting donations to help in the immediate term with things like clothes and shoes, if you have an extra bike or an old laptop or things like that we would love you even more forever.” [The Hills]

Kanye West announces he would trade two Grammies to be seen in an art context at Steve McQueen’s opening at LACMA. [W Magazine]

And following up on another Times special report, here’s an op-ed piece about what the paper got wrong in their story about the terrible conditions for workers in New York nail salons. It’s written by someone in the nail industry. [The New York Review of Books]
The art collector Henry Bloch gave the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City a large gift of paintings. The museum replaced the works of art with prints of the paintings so that Block could hang them in his house. [KCUR]

The not-so-secret secrets of the Art Basel art fair: “Once the fair starts, jurors arrive each morning at 8 to make sure that galleries that have sold items the day before do not replace the empty spaces on their walls with inferior art. Friday Links: Basel Artsy Artnet Email Shit Storm

This story about Art Basel, Artsy.com and now Artnet just keeps getting better. This Monday, Artnet News ran an article detailing Art Basel director Marc Spiegler’s discontent with the way Artsy founder Carter Cleveland described their relationship in a small article in Fortune. According to the Artnet article, Spiegler was upset that Cleveland had suggested Artsy was paid by the fair for their services, and sent an email to all his clients about it. Now, Speigler is claiming that he never sent the email, he has a completely cordial relationship with Artsy and that Artnet made the whole thing up. Artnet has stuck to their guns and has a source who says the fair doesn’t like the fact that Artsy offers a page that allows collectors to search by exhibitor, medium, and price. Why they would object to this is never made clear though. Meanwhile, the Observer has piped in to say that Artnet is a direct competitor of Artsy, and has all but explicitly said the company has reason to ruffle a few feathers. [The Observer]
Comic Relief is a UK non-profit that works to eradicate poverty through granting programs. Their fundraisers usually involve comedy in some way. Here’s an ebay auction of comics to benefit the charity. [Ebay]
Danielle Mysliwiec’s show at Novella Gallery gets a positive review in the rail. It’s a little descriptive-artspeaky for our tastes, but we’re glad Mysliwiec’s woven paintings are getting the attention they deserve. [The Brooklyn Rail]
Whitney Kimball profiles a sex worker for the disabled. Some of the stories are heart breaking: One of Rose’s past clients suffered from a skin-eating cancer, which gradually consumed his body over the course of their relationship. “They had to keep amputating small parts of his body from where the cancer was eating his skin away,” she said. “I couldn’t put too much pressure on his skin, because it would crack and bleed, but he was a very lovely guy, always cracking jokes. He came over because he got in touch with the TLC group and wanted to lose his virginity before he died.” [Hopes and Fears]
