- ArtReview’s Power 100 list is out and we’ve barely heard a word about it since its release October 20th. Is this evidence that we’re over lists? The issue used to create a lot more buzz. This year there are 12 new entries and only one eyebrow raising entry—Katie Hollander and Nato Thompson of Creative Time. We’re of course super excited to see their new projects, but Hollander and Thompson are new in their roles of Executive Director and Artist Director, respectively. Both have been at Creative Time for a while now, but I’d like to give them at least another year before proclaiming their chops proven. [ArtReview]
- Headline of the day: Art Dealers Move Out of the Gallery and into a Taco Bell. It’s also a great story. Stefania Bortolami of Bortolami Gallery, growing tired of the commercial art fair circuit, decided to take a new approach—”yearlong, not primarily commercial, experimental projects in cities that are museum- and culture-rich but are not considered art hubs.” That resulted in Eric Wesley installing his “burrito paintings” in an abandoned Spanish Colonial-style Taco Bell in Cahokia, Ill. - Construction spending on buildings is slated to hit an all time high in New York, at 43.1 billion. This is a result of private development companies building residential housing. But just because there is a lot of spending on apartment buildings doesn’t mean there are more apartments. In fact, the number of built units is down this year due to an increased focus on luxury apartments. [Curbed]
- A report on the panel discussion “Decolonize This Space” at Artists Space, which focused on the gentrification of Chinatown in New York and beyond. Seems like the big victory for this event was the turn out, which garnered more than 200 attendees. The big question of the night was whether artists and gallerists can help stem gentrification, and from the report, it seems everyone agreed that the answer was “yes”. Pressure city council. Don’t displace long term residents. Represent asian artists. Some of these prescriptions sound a little facile, but hey, it’s a start. [Hyperallergic]
