Start your week off with a dose of Civil Rights history Monday at IFC, where fierce pussy is screening The Black Power Mixtape and Wednesday at ICP, where Hettie Jones will be talking about what Making America Great really looks like. Thursday, we’re looking forward to two book launches. Andrea McGinty will be releasing her Ah Yes Bad Things at Printed Matter and Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art is throwing a party to celebrate the catalog for their current exhibition Queer Threads. Friday night there are mysterious but promising exhibitions opening all over Brooklyn. Then it’s DUMBO open studios all weekend. End the week with a day trip to New Haven (seriously, it’s a painless train ride) where Bortolami’s ARTIST/CITY program has paired Tom Burr with a Marcel Breuer masterpiece that now finds itself surrounded by an IKEA parking lot.

The world is a strange and wondrous place. We’ll see you out in it.

Halloween is here! The art world’s favorite holiday. If you aren’t busy working on a last minute costume, head to American Medium Tuesday night to see AFC’s friend Brenna Murphy and pick up her new book, Domain~Lattice. Wednesday night, go to the New Museum’s insanely fun Halloween party.  Then on Thursday, head to Bortolami, where Tom Burr’s installations and photographs serve as a haunted house channeling the ghosts of Chelsea’s gayer, sleazier past. But really, the scariest thing in New York City this week is the NSFW flyer for Nolan Hendrickson’s Halloween, uh, opening at Ramiken Crucible.

Mercifully, this year’s ADAA far was absent of familiar pop art fair staples such as Roy Lichtenstein and James Rosenquist. Many dealers brought contemporary art to the fairs, with familiar names such as Dana Schutz, Jacob Kassay, and James Turrell filling the booths. That, along with a series of in-depth solo booths, contributed to an overall sense of higher quality than in years past.

Piotr Janas’s Minotaurs: You’re Not Noble, You’re Just a Man

Painter Piotr Janas’s exhibition Minotaurs at Bortolami is nothing if not commanding. The unadorned exhibition space is dominated by nine simultaneously stark and organic large-scale paintings of geometry and viscera. Seeing man’s guts strung out in these form-scapes makes the message very clear: Never forget how ugly your humanity is; never pretend it’s noble.

We see a lot more art than we ever get to tell people about, and we want to fix that. Towards that goal, we’ll be posting some quick hits – a paragraph or so of notes from each show we see in a day. Then we’ll argue. Then you can argue. It’ll be fun. These aren’t full reviews, but they’re a starting point. This week, Sergej Jensen, Thomas Scheibitz, Eric Wesley, Michael Snow, On Kawara, and Damien Hirst.
