What happens to the wealthy is what happens to the rest of the art world. At least, that’s what Artprice’s annual contemporary art market report suggests. Every October, Artprice publishes The Artprice Annual Report, a whopping 140-page document about trends in the contemporary art market; they look at art auction records,then talk to dealers and anybody else managing multi-million-dollar art sales to come up with a sense of the health of the market as a whole. We disagree, knowing that what happens at the auction houses doesn’t trickle down to the rest of the art world; for all its flaws, though, we enjoy reading this thing.

Akron Art Museum Sells a Cindy Sherman for $2.8 Million at Christie’s

Tuesday night, the Akron Art Museum sold off Cindy Sherman's Untitled #96 (1981) at Christie's. Continuing the solid sales at New York spring auctions, the “orange” Cindy Sherman sold for $2,882,500, including tax and commission. That's more than the Akron Art Museum's total revenue from 2010.

Sometimes the right idea comes along, but it goes to the wrong brain. That's what happened with MoMA's Cindy Sherman exhibition website. MoMA had the good idea to put up hundreds of images online, and in a rare move for the museum, they hired an outside team to design the website. The bad news: it's a drab, gray mess of navigational tools and small images. I had expected some bells and whistles, but all I got was a glorified slideshow.
