Highlights from the Artprice Contemporary Art Market Report

What happens to the wealthy is what happens to the rest of the art world. At least, that’s what Artprice’s annual contemporary art market report suggests. Every October, Artprice publishes The Artprice Annual Report, a whopping 140-page document about trends in the contemporary art market; they look at art auction records, then talk to dealers and anybody else managing multi-million-dollar art sales to come up with a sense of the health of the market as a whole. We disagree, knowing that what happens at the auction houses doesn’t trickle down to the rest of the art world; for all its flaws, though, we enjoy reading this thing.

Thursday Links!

by Leighann Morris on September 6, 2012
  • Warning! It’s fashion week again. Previously acceptable areas of Manhattan will be flooded with unacceptable fashionistas. Avoid. [HuffPo]
  • AFC’s Paddy Johnson is teaching a class! Do you want to write about art? Enroll, and she’ll teach you. [tumblr]
  • Apparently no fewer than 128 people completed Damien Hirst’s “spot challenge” back in January. 128. They’ll get their prints soon, but more importantly, what the hell, people? [The Art Newspaper]
  • Photographer Juozas Cernius, who’s taken his share of pretty pictures for this blog from around the world, is looking to fund a project documenting the work of aid groups in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. He’s raising the money through IndieGoGo, and then giving the proceeds back to aid organizations. It’s a good thing to do for the world, and maybe you should help him out. [London Free Press]
  • This week, AFC’s Paddy Johnson will be at the Toronto International Film Festival. In anticipation of TIFF, Indiewire have realised 25 films they are looking forward to. Are you excited about seeing Keira Knightley trying to do Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina justice? Us neither. We’re looking forward to The ABC’s of Death, comprised of short horror films by 26 directors. Each was assigned a letter of the alphabet and accompanying word, leaving it up to the director to come up with a short story of death. GNARLY. [Indiewire]
  • Anyone going to TIFF must watch the premiere of Reincarnated, an Andy Capper documentary made about Snoop Dogg embracing rastafarian culture/smoking lots of weed in Jamaica. Anyone not going must watch this trailer. [YouTube]
  • Wanna see Putin in a little white suit, hand-gliding over Siberia to “help endangered cranes begin their migration to wintering grounds in Iran and India”? Now you can! [Animal New York]
  • The Walker had an Internet Cat Video Festival and we were really excited. The “people’s choice” cat video winner was revealed last week, and now we’re disappointed. Existential feline Henri 2, Paw De Deux won out of the thousands of entries, that included Keyboard Cat and Nyan Cat. AFC’s Paddy Johnson has something to say about the unexpected result. [Today]
  • James Panero writes about how punk rock influenced Pussy Riot and Ai Weiwei. In a nutshell: “While at times misused within Western culture, … when employed against oppressive regimes [punk] can be potent.” [The Wall Street Journal]

Links! How Not to Curate, Promote

by Will Brand on March 28, 2012

  • The Indianapolis Museum of Art scored a bit of a coup last year when curator Lisa Freiman was chosen to curate the American Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. How best to cash in? By straight-up cashing in, hiring Freiman out as an art consultant to a museum trustee. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re doing anything immoral; “immoral” would be if Freiman recommended a trustee buy up an artist immediately before they got a show at the museum. Except, yeah, that happened too. [BLOUINTyler BLOUINGreen]
  • Felix Salmon has a good piece at Reuters examining the secondary market (or lack thereof) for Damien Hirst. Salmon argues that Hirst has created a market largely based around himself as seller, limiting opportunities for resale and generally acting more like Prada than Richter. The finale: “Collectors are not getting rich off [Hirst's] work. But he is.” [Reuters]
  • Wandering around Wikipedia last night, we came across some wikipromotion for Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, the artistic one amongst the Bahraini royal family. It’s a heroic biography. Read about his development of Individualism (it ends in -ism, it’s serious guys), his early interest in horses, and his time as the Undersecretary of Immigration. Listen, we’re not saying you can’t do a little self-promotion, but this is over the top. Besides which, you’re a Shaikh—there’s gotta be a better way. Remember when Phillips de Pury put on a show with Leyla Aliyeva, the daughter of Azerbaijan’s dictator? Get on board that train! [Wikipedia]

Monday Links: #GIFs #MetaGramCity #Naznecromancers

by Paddy Johnson on March 12, 2012

  • A rabbit hole almost impossible to exit: TVTrope’s entry on Walt Disney’s Anne Frank. The movie doesn’t actually exist—though Variety reported in 2009 that Disney got the rights to a new stage rendition written and directed by David Mamet—but if it did, it would *very* loosely based on the same named book and would include a three talking animal sidekicks, a Nazi necromancer Femme Fatale, and a Happily Ever After ending. Naturally the list of tropes indexing this entry is five times as long as the stub. [TVTropes]
  • I’ve got a longer post on this in the queue, so get ready for more thoughts on PBS’s GIF special. Tom Moody got a few words in early. [Tom Moody]
  • The Knight Foundation is generously funding ARTLURKER’s Miami Writer’s Prize. The Miami Writer's Prize is open to any resident of Miami-Dade County who is not already on ARTLURKER's roster and/or has not had more than three art -related texts published in print. [ARTLURKER]
  • Last night I made a video of a GIF of a RT of a RT of a Tumble of a Pinterest of a Instagram of a Instagram of a Instagram of a Tweet of a Google Search. Soundtrack: Tron. The video already has two dislikes and miraculously, 50 views. Miss Galperina, I believe it’s your move. [Youtube]
  • In other bones Salmon picks, he’s no fan of MoMA’s “Foreclosed Exhibition”. A good read. [Architect]
  • Happy Birthday Elaine de Kooning. [Artnet]
