Highlights From The Marciano Collection

The Marciano Art Foundation has been the biggest pleasant surprise of 2017. As I’ve mentioned on the blog before, the new museum, funded by the GUESS Jeans fortune, delivers big-time with site-specific special projects from Jim Shaw and Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch. Those installations are so enthusiasm-inspiring it’s almost easy to overlook the “quieter” collection itself, on display mainly in the third floor galleries.

That would be a mistake, because the collection—the bones of the Marciano Art Foundation—has been curated in such a satisfying , thoughtfully-paced manner that the viewing experience stays engaging throughout. That’s a rarity, unfortunately, in so many hangs of private collections, which tend not to have a specific focus beyond showing off their holdings. Here, though, there are narrative interests evident in the Marcianos’ collection, perhaps highlighted by the apocalyptic nature of the Jim Shaw show and the site-specific “behind-the-scenes” vibe of the Trecartin/Fitch collaboration—namely an interest in social tension or upheaval and works that reveal their process, respectively.

Jean de Boulogne’s Neptune is too sexy for Facebook, apparently

Why do thousands of us have memories of a nonexistent early 90s children movie Shazaam starring Sinbad as a genie? One theory is that we’re from an alternate dimension. This is so, so weird. [NewStatesman]

Adam Harvey, the artist behind anti-facial-recognition makeup technique “CV Dazzle” (which is so cool) has designed a textile print “HyperFace” that overwhelms algorithms with hundreds of false faces. [Mashable]

Are people finally tiring of social media wars? We’ve noticed a lot of people unplugging and/or stepping back from Facebook and Twitter citing self preservation (including our own Michael Anthony Farley). Now the articles are starting to come out. Frankly, this seems like a step in the right direction. [The Guardian]

Hyperallergic has released their annual Most Powerless list. It hurts a bit to see David Hammons, an artist who has made his reputation by resisting authority and wealth structures, on the list this year. It seems the staff felt that Hammons couldn’t out maneuver a news cycle that included his gallerist’s son as head of Trump’s treasury. [Hyperallergic]

A photo of a 1560s statue of Neptune by Jean de Boulogne has been censored by Facebook for being too sexy. [The Telegraph]

The long, dramatic story of how George Lucas has been trying to build a “lowbrow” museum of narrative art in three different cities. Mayors seem to want it, but no one else does. Lucas does not come out smelling like roses here, as he seems unwilling to compromise on much and emails reveal his team refusing to release even basic information (like what would be in the museum) to potential partners. Picasso fans take note: Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía is celebrating the 80th anniversary of “Guernica” with a massive Picasso show from April to September. This will involve the loan of more than 150 works from collections across the globe. [artnet News]

The Best of Everything, 2016

Going through the images on our phones and our archives, we learned there’s actually quite a bit to celebrate. So much so, in fact, it took us an entire week to assemble this post. Chicago-based, Cuban-born artist Alejandro Figueredo Díaz-Perera has been living behind a wall for three weeks, in quiet protest of his U.S.-Cuban policies. [Chicago Magazine]
Márcia Oliani, 54, the finance manager of an art gallery who recently endured six days without water in her Sao Paolo apartment unleashes some crazy vitriol on the governor and the water utility company Sabesp. The city has been experiencing the worst drought they’ve had in the last century “I feel hatred, hatred of the governor and of Sabesp,” she said. “I’d like to take them out and set fire to them. They completely failed to warn us, and have just continued to lie about this throughout.” [The New York Times]
City Desk Studio has been trying to sell the skyway they purchased in 2006 for $1.2 million since 2009. Having been unsuccessful, they are now offering $5000 to anyone who will purchase it. Greg Allen has devised a cheapo shipping option, which involves removing the skyway’s floor, but we think the permits required to get it on the barge he’s proposed might blow the budget. [Greg Allen]

Looks like we all need to move to Minneapolis. Some stats: “The Minneapolis–St. Paul metro area is richer by median household income than Pittsburgh or Salt Lake City (or New York, or Chicago, or Los Angeles). Among residents under 35, the Twin Cities place in the top 10 for highest college-graduation rate, highest median earnings, and lowest poverty rate, according to the most recent census figures.” Why is the city so successful? According to Myles Shaver, a professor at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, it’s because “its most important resource never leaves the city: educated managers of every level.” I guess that’s a resource more valuable than oil. Nothing even remotely to do with art, but you gotta read Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis in the Times opinion pages today. He talks uses game theory and Kant to explain his position on austerity and Greek’s current negotiation strategy. [The New York Times]

71-year-old artist David Hammons has announced he is opening a gallery in Yonkers, but little details are known. Here’s what Andrew Russeth found out about the gallery: “Hammons’s space, at 39 Lawrence Street, is a one-story brick building with tall ceilings, filling a lot that measures two-thirds of an acre, about 29,200 square feet. According to property records, an entity called Duchamp Realty LLC, which is registered to the artist’s home address in Brooklyn, bought it for $2.05 million in January 2014.” [ARTnews]

A letter from “Artists for Palestine” was published over this weekend in The Guardian. Over 700 art-worlders have decided to disengage with Israel in the cultural sphere. This means that invitations to any cultural centers with ties to the Israeli government will be declined. The 700 includes John Berger, Brian Eno, and Jeremy Deller. [The Guardian]

Times Critic Caught in This Week’s Witch Hunt

“Black artists didn’t invent assemblage.” That statement, and others like it, written by The New York Times art critic Ken Johnson, has provoked the ire of fellow critics, artists, and Times readers alike. His remarks about two recent exhibitions, Now Dig This! Art & Black Los Angeles 1960-1980 and The Female Gaze: Women Artists Making Their World have exploded into a tirade across Facebook—with complaints lodged by Kara Walker and Jerry Saltz among others—and now, an anonymous group has gone so far as to petition the Times to “acknowledge and address this editorial lapse and the broader issues raised by these texts.” So, what are these broader issues, and problems, if any?
