We were pretty sure 2016 was a stinker until we sat down to reflect on all that was good. Going through the images on our phones and our archives, we learned there’s actually quite a bit to celebrate. So much so, in fact, it took us an entire week to assemble this post. Dream Job Alert: Creative Time is Seeking a New Curator

by Michael Anthony Farley on July 14, 2016

Do you have at least 5 years of curatorial experience? Consider applying to Creative Time, the arts organization that’s funded public arts programs such as Duke Riley’s LED-lit pigeons over the East River (above) and Tom Sachs’ epic SPACE PROGRAM: Mars.

Creative Time has been bringing us high-quality, strange, and smart public arts programming since 1974, with an eye towards politically-charged works and projects that seem unlikely candidates for funding. There’s more information about the position here. Resumes, cover letters, and two references should be emailed to jobs@creativetime.org.

On Friday, Creative Time staked out a small plot of Rockaway Beach, attracting a small crowd and a dense flock of boom mics to its second annual Sandcastle Competition. There was so much press, in fact, that “Who are you writing for?” was a pretty reasonable introduction. From there, conversations migrated towards photo strategies and documentation.

That’s because it’s well worth documenting the shit out of this event; good sandcastles make for a full-day artist pageant and a manifesto for teamwork.

The Week’s Must-See Art Events: The Nutty Performers

by The AFC Staff on August 5, 2013

Get ready for some seriously awesome transformative art works and avant garde film footage! For a taste of how weird this week is gonna get: Klaus von Nichtssagend becomes a pond, the Bruce High Quality Foundation does “CATS,” and there’ll be footage of the Tompkins Square Park riot at the New Museum. Plus, a whole lot of C. Spencer Yeh.
