For everyone who has complained that the art world is too apolitical in the past month or so, take note of how 2017 is kicking off. We have a week of feminist exhibitions, the start of a month-long project about Trump’s America Saturday at Petzel Gallery, and shows that tackle topics from water contamination to the holocaust and the attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

Welcome to the art world in the Trump era. If the list of participants at Petzel’s event is any indication, the big guns are coming out.

For those of us who didn’t get out much last year, we get to head to the White Columns Annual for the last round-up of everything we should’ve seen. Also in significant artworks from 2014: Godard’s 3D film “Goodbye to Language” is screening at BAM. Do not miss out. You can not pirate this on the Internet.

Not much connects the Lower East Side’s current crop of summer shows, except maybe for a shared inclination towards some (much-needed) weirdness. 47 Canal brings a seaweed-covered TV to DTR, while those looking for their fix of visual hallucinogenics should head to Lisa Cooley’s Eric’s Trip. Time for round two of massive openings. After over a year, CANADA Gallery finally reopens in its new Broome street space, right across from P!. On Thursday night, Chelsea opens. On Friday night, something’s going down at the Redhook galleries, but we’re not sure what. And tomorrow, we hope Cleopatra’s doubles its benefit goals for artist, curator, and Dependent Fair founder Rose Marcus, to help her pay for major surgery–and so do many talented artists who’ve contributed to her benefit auction. All that, and more, after the jump!

Half the Lower East Side transplanted itself in Miami this week for NADA, so we decided to join them. We spent most of yesterday hanging out with the 70 plus international exhibitors at the fair, and have a slideshow with commentary to show for it. What we liked below.
