A Pledge to Mixed Greens Gallery: I’m Going to All Your Future Shows

After 16 years of operation, the Chelsea-based gallery Mixed Greens will close its doors when its lease runs out at the end of the year. The gallery, which was founded by philanthropist and collector Paige West in 1999, had an unusual beginning: it first launched as a website dedicated to promoting the work of emerging artists. In 2005, after much success online, it opened a physical space at the request of the many artists they promoted.

The gallery has a special place in the hearts of those at AFC. Paige was part of the early blogging community we, too, were a part of, and she blogged enthusiastically about emerging art (she was talking about Alex Da Corte in 2008), overheard conversations at fairs (which were sometimes horrific), and, of course, collecting (she wrote a book on the topic). Then, when Mixed Greens opened its physical space, it launched its own blog, The Pit, which is run by the staff and for a time linked frequently to other publications, including our own. It was here, that the gallery made their announcement of closing. (My favorite posts revealed their obsession with sharks. I approve.)

A Day at VOLTA: I Bought an Art Sharpie

When I approached this piece for AFC I decided in advance to photograph how booths were set up and to look at the environment as opposed to the art. When I arrived all that changed. I ended up photographing some art as well as people I bumped into, and had some really funny interactions. Best of all, I bought a piece of art.

Time for round two of massive openings. After over a year, CANADA Gallery finally reopens in its new Broome street space, right across from P!. On Thursday night, Chelsea opens. On Friday night, something’s going down at the Redhook galleries, but we’re not sure what. And tomorrow, we hope Cleopatra’s doubles its benefit goals for artist, curator, and Dependent Fair founder Rose Marcus, to help her pay for major surgery–and so do many talented artists who’ve contributed to her benefit auction. All that, and more, after the jump!

(e)merge and The Washington/Baltimore Divide

“This fair isn’t about making money” (e)merge art fair co-owner Helen Allen told me last night. According to Allen, it’s more about building community, a point evident in the attendees. Walking through the halls of the Capital Skyline Hotel in Washington took several hours last night, as everyone seemed to know everyone. (e)merge is the definition of a community-based fair.

In an effort to cover more art before shows close, AFC decided to visit a handful of galleries and report what we saw. More than usual, I wanted to stay longer. Here are my notes from five shows at Mitchell-Innes & Nash, Mixed Greens, Paula Cooper, and Tanya Bonakdar.

PULSE Slideshow: Paintings of Horses and a Pen for Collectors

After the slideshows of NADA, SEVEN, and Art Basel, we offer Pulse as a palette-cleanser.  The fair, featuring 90-odd galleries in Miami’s Ice Palace, wasn’t the best we’ve seen. Normally a little better photography at the fair is on view, so it’s a shame Pulse’s strength wasn’t better exhibited. Better luck next time I guess.

Getting What You Pay For: RISD MFAs at Mixed Greens

In New York, everybody delivers: bodegas, McDonalds, and, of course, RISD, with MFAs still warm from their thesis show. Mixed Greens has brought us some highlights from Providence, and while the resulting show is essentially themeless, it nonetheless unearths some real talent.
