This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Winter is Coming

by Michael Anthony Farley on March 13, 2017

The week is of course dominated by two news items: The Whitney Biennial and The Wintery Downfall.

After the blizzard, Wednesday is a great opportunity to get yourself in the snowy mood, art-wise. Enjoy doses of culture from freezing, windswept regions, including Marsden Hartley’s Maine at The Met Breuer (if you’re missing the Whitney’s old digs) and Berlin-based Danish/Norwegian duo Elmgreen & Dragset in conversation with Dan Cameron at The Flag Art Foundation. Later, catch the Icelandic thriller Hevn at Scandinavia House’s New Nordic Cinema screening series.

Other highlights include Fort Gansevoort’s female-perspective sports show March Madness Thursday night and TRANSFER’s four year birthday party, which will feature affordable editions from some of our favorite digital artists.

Oh yeah, and make time to check out the Biennial. I’m told it’s good, but “traumatic”. An appropriately bleak show to match our physical and political climate?

by Paddy Johnson on April 4, 2016

Need a break from relentless election coverage? Too bad. You’re going to have to wait until November for that—and definitely skip a few art events. And we don’t recommend doing that, because this week feminist icons Martha Wilson and Martha Rosler will speak at Pratt. Given that both their work smartly addresses politics, the subject is sure to come up in discussion and will likely offer a few illuminating perspectives. We’re looking forward to it.

Other highlights in our wheelhouse: tech shows! MVR 3 at Babycastles and Mark Dorf and Sara Ludy at SVA will have you covered. Also—the gaze! Anne Collier’s photographs at Anton Kern often picture the mechanics of reproduction—think image of an eye in paper cutter. They creep us out, but in just the right way.

It’s raining plastic raindrops. Yes, Miami Art Week is upon us, and you’ve already gotten our take on what’s worth checking out outside the satellites. Traffic is promising to be a real shit show with the Venetian Causeway being closed, a favoured route to the Beach. Even though the city has a free, Basel express bus, getting around will be even more of a hassle. So more than ever, plan ahead, and rely on our curated fair guide. We’re doubtful you’ll be able to do it all, but that’s always the case anyways with Miami—at least you try to do it all. Gold star for effort.

This week at the L Magazine I’ve put together a list of the best and worst exhibitions that stretches the term “exhibition” well beyond its intended use. That’s okay; art is not easily categorized. As for reflections, this was a good year for art. A lot of much needed change is here and on the horizon. From Occupy Wall Street, to ArtPrize, to Hennessy Youngman’s youtube channel, 2011 is the year art’s started to unravel a little.

Rashaad Newsome’s Rap Joust Embarrasses Everybody

If Marlborough Gallery had a reputation to worry about, they would be busy doing a lot of damage control for last Wednesday's rap joust, directed by Rashaad Newsome. A real-life manifestation of POWHIDA's mock-douchebag performance a few months back, it was another masturbatory celebration of wealth that sidelined the performers and sincerely made everyone look like VIP douchebags.
