This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Queens Reigns Supreme

A decade ago, if you said that Manhattanites would be regularly heading to Queens for their culture fix it’s unlikely most people would’ve believed you outside of Long Island City. But now the borough is increasingly our go-to destination for art events. From Marni Kotak’s artist talk at Microscope Gallery tonight (just on the Brooklyn side of the Ridgewood border) to the surrealist pop-up “DEBTBANK” at the Queens Museum on Sunday, everyone should be spending most of the week East of the East River.

Other Queens highlights include Lex Brown’s solo show and performance at Deli Gallery on Friday night and a three-day preview of a Meredith Monk performance at Queenslab in Ridgewood. Arguably the most fun to be had, though, will be the 2017 Flux-a-Thon benefit in Long Island City. That interactive parade will wind from Flux Factory to neighboring Plaxall Gallery for prizes and an hours-long dance party.

We can’t even keep up with all the Schutz controversy. A fake letter by Schutz saying piece should be taken down was circulated and then debunked. Now there are complaints that Hannah Black, the artist who wrote the letter demanding that the painting be removed and destroyed, isn’t black enough to have signed the protest letter, in which she removed the white signatures after critique, (thanks Facebook). Kara Walker, artist and a former professor of Schutz has weighed in on the controversy over Instagram and says the artwork should be seen. Howard Halle at Time Out shares that view. [The Internet]

Healthcare update: The bill failed to pass after the White House caved to the Freedom Caucus demands to that health care providers not need to support basic services like emergency room care, maternity care, and substance abuse, and “moderate’ GOPs peeled off. Now Trump is threatening the GOP that will be stuck with Obamacare (yay!) if they don’t pass the bill. But isn’t that obvious? [The New York Times]
Art Basel Hong Kong sounds like it was interesting: “Better than that was earlier in the afternoon when a man wearing a purple mask and a G-string attached to a bloodied sanitary pad was encircled by a human lasso of suited security guards and then strong-armed out the door. Finding Light (And An Ode To The Ass) In The 2017 Whitney Houston Biennial

Seven small spray bottles labeled “Trigger Spray” and a packet of tissues emblazoned with “Your Feelings Are Valid” sit on a pedestal in a back corner of the Whitney Houston Biennial at Chashama. In a silly sendup of trigger warnings and safe spaces, the corresponding label for the work by Elana Langer lists humor along with the other materials. As it turns out, this isn’t just an ingredient in Langer’s piece. Humor is key to many of the all-women group show’s inclusions, which felt like a breath of fresh air with the doom and gloom of both the Whitney Biennial and the daily outrage of the Trump administration.

Stella Forces Museum Closures, Delays Whitney Biennial Opening Gala

This Week’s Must-See Art Events: Winter is Coming

The week is of course dominated by two news items: The Whitney Biennial and The Wintery Downfall.

After the blizzard, Wednesday is a great opportunity to get yourself in the snowy mood, art-wise. Enjoy doses of culture from freezing, windswept regions, including Marsden Hartley’s Maine at The Met Breuer (if you’re missing the Whitney’s old digs) and Berlin-based Danish/Norwegian duo Elmgreen & Dragset in conversation with Dan Cameron at The Flag Art Foundation. Later, catch the Icelandic thriller Hevn at Scandinavia House’s New Nordic Cinema screening series.

Other highlights include Fort Gansevoort’s female-perspective sports show March Madness Thursday night and TRANSFER’s four year birthday party, which will feature affordable editions from some of our favorite digital artists.

Oh yeah, and make time to check out the Biennial. I’m told it’s good, but “traumatic”. An appropriately bleak show to match our physical and political climate?

David Carr offers some much needed insight into the firing of New York Times editor Jill Abramson, saying that all the talk about pay inequity was a sideshow. The real issue, he speculates, was that the Times had been lagging in digital endeavors, and in response, she tried to bring in a digital expert, Janine Gibson, a senior editor at The Guardian. This proved to be an issue in terms of office management, as Abramson failed to tell Dean Baquet, the paper’s managing editor, that he would now have to share his job with someone else. Baquet was furious and threatened to quit. [The New York Times]

Thursday Links: I Guess We’re Getting a Clitney Perennial

The Yams collective withdraws from the Whitney Biennial, citing the biennial inclusion of Joe Scanlan’s Donelle Woolford works. The timing to this entire situtation is odd; the group resigned after their work was already shown. Their video piece only ran from March 7 – March 9. [Hyperallergic]
